Confucious Says...

A wise, experienced political professional (who will remain anonymous) said to me today at the State Capitol:

"There are some ultra-liberals in the General Assembly. There are also some ultra-conservatives in the General Assembly. Do not drink the kool-aid of either."

Ah, yes...the wisdom of the wise is wise indeed....

Shakespeare said "What's in a name?"

What exactly is an "ultra-conservative" or an "ultra-liberal." And who gets to say?

No precise definitions here, but I usually think of the word "ideologue" in conjuction with "ultra conservative" or "ultra liberal."

An example: One professor of mine spent an entire class period teaching us a blatantly Marxist view of the world, and of the subject we were studying. No other possible approaches were presented,at any point in the semester. After this particular class, I approached the professor and asked (earnestly) if there were any other possible approaches to studying this subject, beyond a far-left, atheist, Marxist point of view.

The professor looked baffled by the question. "Well, no. Not that I'm aware of."

She couldn't imagine that intelligent people could disagree about this topic. In the professor's view, only her worldview was acceptable and intelligent.

To quote another more reasonable professor, to whom I related this incident:

"Well, that's what happens when you're an ideologue."

I think the reality is everyone gets to say (and disagree passionately) as to who is ultra-liberal or ultra-conservative. Maybe that's a good thing.
